Mars Entry, Descent, & Landing Instrumentation 2
MEDLI2 is an instrument suite to be installed in the heatshield and backshell of the Mars 2020 aeroshell. MEDLI2 will gather data on the aerothermal, thermal protection system, and aerodynamic performance characteristics of the Mars 2020 Entry Vehicle during its entry and descent to the Mars surface providing engineering data to improve future Mars missions.
Langley Research Center leads the overall project providing project management and systems engineering, and development of the Mars Entry Atmospheric Data System and the Sensor Support Electronics. Ames Research Center leads the science and development of the MEDLI2 Instrumented Sensor Plugs and heat flux sensors. JPL and Lockheed Martin integrate MEDLI2 into the Mars 2020 Entry System.
MEDLI2 is funded by the Space Technology Mission Directorate (Game Changing Division), the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate (Advanced Exploration Systems), and the Science Mission Directorate (Mars Program).
