"What Color is the Ocean" at World Ocean Day 2016

Celebrate World Ocean Day at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Q?rius (pronounced curious) Hall on Saturday, June 4. Visit "What color is the ocean?" from 10 am to 1 pm and 1:30 to 4:30 pm to learn how light transmits through different water, explore samples through a microscope and see how it looks from NASA satellites. Participants from the Ocean Ecology Laboratory include Stephanie Schollaert Uz, Aimee Neeley, Ivona Cetinic, Javier Concha, Ryan Vandermeulen, and Joel Scott.

Dr. Jeremy Werdell of the Ocean Ecology Laboratory has been selected as the Pre-Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) Project Scientist. Dr. Antonio Mannino, also of the Ocean Ecology Laboratory, has been selected as the Deputy Project Scientist (Oceans).

Three Lab members on South Pacific Bio-optics Cruise

Three members of the Ocean Ecology Laboratory’s Field Support Group will embark on a 45-day journey from Hobart, Tasmania to Papeete, Tahiti on the icebreaker R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer (NBP). The group will collect biogeochemical samples and bio-optical data across the South Pacific. These data will eventually be ingested into NASA’s SeaWiFS Bio-optical Archive and Storage System (SeaBASS) and subsequently used for ocean color satellite validation activities.
