Goddard Scientists Named Fellows of the American Geophysical Union

Four Goddard scientists were named 2016 fellows of the American Geophysical Union in recognition of their contributions to Earth and space sciences. Claire Parkinson, a senior scientist in Goddard’s Earth Sciences Division; Nat Gopalswamy in the Solar Physics Laboratory; Brent Holben in the Biospheric Sciences Laboratory; and Paul Mahaffy, director of Goddard’s Solar System Exploration Division, were among the 60 new fellows elected this year. The American Geophysical Union established its Fellows Program in 1962, and only 0.1% of the organization’s membership receives this recognition in any given year. The new fellows will be honored in a December 14 ceremony during the American Geophysical Union’s fall 2016 meeting in San Francisco.

AAAS Names NASA Goddard Scientists 2015 Fellows

Three scientists in the Sciences and Exploration Directorate have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Lucy McFadden (693), Jose Rodriguez (614) and Compton Tucker (618) are among 347 AAAS members awarded this honor for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. Congratulations!

Holben selected to receive 2015 Yoram J. Kaufman Unselfish Cooperation in Research Award at the AGU Fall Meeting

Congratulations to Dr. Brent Holben, Biospheric Sciences Lab, for his selection to receive the 2015 Yoram J. Kaufman Unselfish Cooperation in Research Award at the AGU Fall Meeting. Brent’s selection is particularly poignant as Brent worked closely with Yoram and embodies Yoram’s legacy of unselfish cooperation here at GSFC.

The award recognizes “Broad influence in atmospheric science through exceptional creativity, inspiration of younger scientists, mentoring, international collaborations, and unselfish cooperation in research” and Brent is cited for “his seminal theoretical and experimental contributions to the remote sensing of clouds and aerosol properties, particularly in the development of AERONET.”

Brown appointed as Editor in Chief

Dr. Molly Brown has been appointed as the Editor in Chief of the new Elsevier journal, Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment (RSASE). The journal will be focused on remote sensing studies that address specific topics with an emphasis on environmental and societal issues - regional/local studies with global significance. The journal will be launched in 2015.

NASA in Alaska 2014

The Alaska G-LiHT (Goddard – Lidar Hyperspectral Thermal) Campaign is actively collecting data in interior Alaska. The project is a partnership between 618 Scientists Ross Nelson (PI), Bruce Cook (G-LiHT PI), Doug Morton (Co-I), Larry Corp (Instrument Manager), and Matt Fagan (NPP) and colleagues Hans Andersen and Robert Pattison at the US Forest Service.

Temilola Fatoyinbo-Agueh Receives Presidential Early Career Award

Temilola Fatoyinbo-Agueh, of the Biospheric Sciences Laboratory Division (Code 618), has been named a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Temilola, along with 95 other researchers, was named today by President Barack Obama for this award, the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

Recipients are selected annually for their continued service to their communities, through scientific leadership, outreach, and other public service works to educate the community about science. They are at the frontiers of their fields and show great promise for America’s future in science and engineering.

Dr. Elizabeth M. Middleton receives Goddard's 2012 William Nordberg Memorial Award for Earth Science

Dr. Betsy Middleton of the Biospheric Sciences Laboratory, Code 618, has been named this year's recipient of the William Nordberg Memorial Award for Earth Science. This high achievement award recognizes the Goddard employee who best exhibits the qualities of broad scientific accomplishments in the area of Earth Sciences that exemplified Dr. Nordberg’s own career.

Dr. Middleton is a trained ecologist and botanist and joined NASA GSFC in 1978 during the early days of the Eastern Regional Remote Sensing Applications Center (ERRSAC), predecessor of the Biospheric Sciences Lab, where she was a project manager and remote sensing specialist. Over the past two decades, her research has focused on hyperspectral reflectance and fluorescence properties of vegetation, with emphasis on applications for remote sensing retrievals of important carbon cycle science parameters. In addition to basic laboratory and field studies to untangle the interaction of reflectance and fluorescent properties of vegetation, she has managed a team that pioneered the use of MODIS ocean bands for land applications, specifically for terrestrial vegetation assessments of photosynthetic efficiency over forests.

Dr. Middleton is a member of Ecological Society of America (ESA); American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS); American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Inc. (IEEE); American Geophysical Union (AGU) with over 100 manuscripts in publication.
