I am pleased to announce the AmeriFlux 20th Anniversary Special Issue in the journal Agricultural and Forest Meteorology. Manuscripts are solicited from across the broad spectrum of research using flux data or flux sites. We are particularly interested in studies that examine linkages among ecosystem processes and the environment, test innovative observational and analytical approaches, or… More

We are conducting  a pilot study to evaluate methods for the estimations of aerodynamic roughness parameters (i.e., roughness length (z0), zero plane displacement height (d)) from single-level eddy covariance measurements. Results will guide development for future AmeriFlux and FLUXNET datasets.  Thanks to the flux community, most required variables are available through the AmeriFlux database (e.g., wind speed (WS),… More

At one of the NGEE Arctic sites in the Seward Peninsula, near the town of Council, Alaska, the Dream Team—myself, Oriana Chafe, Margaret Torn (NG Arctic team lead), Stan Wullschleger (NG Arctic PI), Mark Conrad, Bryan Curtis and Sigrid Dengel (AMP) (see photo, left to right)—is flying a DGI model Inspire-1 UAS (unmanned aircraft system, or drone)…. Read how our AmeriFlux community contributed to this synthesis of data from 22 AmeriFlux towers. The authors write about responses of terrestrial ecosystems to extreme climate events (drought and heat), and the impact on the carbon cycle. This paper was just published in PNAS late April 2016 (doi: 10.1073/pnas.1519620113). See LBNL feature story by Dan Krotz,… More

Koen Hufkens shared his implementation of a toolbox focused on exploring and visualizing AmeriFlux site data. Please see his announcement and links to his original post and the AmerifluxR software package below. I recently finished a first iteration of AmerifluxR, a R toolbox for Ameriflux data exploration / visualization. A quick writeup can be found on… More

The AmeriFlux Portable Eddy Covariance System (PECS) is used to evaluate data quality at sites in the AmeriFlux network. The PECS is deployed side-by-side for short deployments (10-14 days). The current PECS was designed and built by Dave Billesbach. The Tech Team has two PECS which allows simultaneous deployments. The PECS may be operated in different configurations depending… More
