On This Day in History:
1787 – The newly activated Massachusetts militia force of 4,400 men led by General Benjamin Lincoln assembles to combat rebels led by Daniel Shays in his unsuccessful attempt to seize weaponry from the armory in Springfield and overthrow the government. Daniel Shays, a Revolutionary War veteran, led the uprising against perceived economic and civil rights injustices. The events of the rebellion affected debates at the U.S. Constitutional Convention, and ultimately the shape of the new government.

USACE has revised and renewed 50 nationwide permits for work in streams, wetlands and other waters of the US. Two permits were added for 2017: NWP 53 provides for an efficient authorization process to remove low-head dams to restore streams and enhance public safety and NWP 54 covers construction and maintenance of living shorelines to control erosion in coastal areas.

Our Tully Lake is located on the East Branch of the Tully River in Royalston, Mass., is a part of our (the Army Corps of Engineers) network of flood risk management dams on tributaries of the Connecticut River (including sister dam Birch Hill Dam). The dam at Tully Lake in Royalston lies across the East Branch of the Tully River. From Athol, it can be reached traveling three miles north on Route 32. In conjunction with Birch Hill Dam, Tully Lake provides flood protection to Athol, Orange, and other communities on the Millers River. USACE totals from this year's National Public Lands Day.

Nationwide the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had a great National Public Lands Day! This year, 72 #USACE projects held NPLD events on 24 Sep 2016 with 6,266 volunteers serving 26,303 hours and 218 partner organizations supporting the mission. Members of the community accomplished significant amounts of work, including vegetation planting, roadside and shoreline clean up, grassland restoration, trail restoration, erosion ...control, butterfly garden improvements, wetland planting, and fish habitat work.

A grateful 'thank you' to all of the volunteers that made NPLD so successful this year!

Also, thank you to all of the NPLD site managers and NRM staff for your efforts in providing opportunities for your communities to engage and volunteer at their local lake and river projects, as well as reaching out to new partners to be involved in the events!

Travelers Alert: Maintenance work for the Bourne Bridge scheduled for December 5, has been cancelled and rescheduled for Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am on Wednesday.

Travel lanes will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction.
