The mission of the Biosciences Division is to use state-of-the-art technology to conduct multidisciplinary basic research that will increase our understanding of the fundamental molecular mechanisms of life. The goal is to enable important advances in environmental protection and remediation, energy production and sustainability, and human health and welfare.

Research projects range from ecosystems to genomes and proteins and to important biochemical processes at the molecular level. The goals of the division include gaining predictive understanding of biological processes controlling environmental fluxes (carbon, nutrients, and contaminants) and improving our understanding of how these processes affect ecosystem function. The division hosts a number of facilities to support the efforts of our multidisplinary and diverse staff.
