Fisheries History

NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is the direct descendant of the Nation's first Federal conservation agency, the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries (usually just called the "Fish Commission"). Read More.

NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, founded in 1871 as the U.S. Commission on Fish and Fisheries, is the Natin's oldest Federal conservation agency. As such, it has been publishing the results of its research for more than 140 years, and the tradition of scientific publishing is continued today by the NMFS Scientific Publications Office (SPO) in Seattle, Washington, which is part of the Fisheries Economics and Social Sciences Division of the Office of Science and Technology at NMFS headquarters. Formal NMFS publications include the quarterly journals, Fishery Bulletin and Marine Fisheries Review, and the NOAA Professional Paper series (formerly NOAA Technical Report series). In addition, the SPO provides technical and administrative editorial support to NMFS headquarters offices, which includes coordinating publication of three series of the NOAA Technical Memorandum NMFS. The office also publishes the Our Living Oceans series and other special publications. To learn more about these publications, please click on the links in the menu above. We have created a digital archive of all publications produced in our core publication series, as well as some discontinued series and special publications. Visit our Legacy Series page for links to these electronic files.
