Gridded FX-Net

Definition

Gridded FX-Net allows field users to run the AWIPS-I workstation (called D/2D) on their remote Linux desktops. Normally, D/2D is required to be co-located with the AWIPS-I application and data servers. Gridded FX-Net decoupled that design dependency, additionally creating customized server-side spoolers which compress the model data when it arrives. The Local Data Manager (LDM) utility is then used to push subscribed products to the client.

History

Gridded FX-Net was born out of the requirement that field-offices had for retrieving and manipulating model data for inclusion in their downstream research and/or third-party tools. The fact that the solution also gave field-users remote access to D/2D on their Linux desktops was an additional boon.

Compression

Gridded FX-Net uses precision-controlled wavelet compression, which was designed in cooperation with the Cooperative Institute of Research of the Atmosphere (CIRA) joint institute. This compression is used to reduce model data either by compression ratio or error tolerance. The compression works on data layers (2D) or data volumes (3D). A simple rules-based design allows administrators to tailor compression to any given model output. These "product rules" are qualified by the following characteristics and facilitate fine-level granularity for how any given model data are compressed.

  • File Type (eg. GINI, NetCDF, etc.)
  • Product Type (e.g. grid, text, etc.)
  • Satellite Type (e.g. Visible, WV/IR, etc.)
  • Domain (e.g. CONUS 212, NDFD, NAT204, etc.)
  • Model (e.g. NAM80, GFS80, etc.)
  • Variable (e.g. temperature, relative humidity, etc.)
  • Compression Type (e.g. error tolerance, compression ratio, etc.)
