...MEDFORD OREGON WEATHER REVIEW: NOVEMBER 2020...

The wet season finally made it`s appearance during November 2020
and the month was considerably more active than October,
especially during the first half of the month. Unseasonably warm
temperatures continued during the first week of the month, and the
Medford Airport recorded a new daily high temperature record on
the 4th with 77 degrees. The pattern quickly transitioned to an
active winter like pattern on the 6th, and over the course of 3
days, the high temperature in Medford dropped by almost 40
degrees! Numerous systems moved through the region, bringing much
needed beneficial rainfall and mountain snow. In fact, the back to
back weather systems resulted in the above average rainfall and
snowpack across the region for the month of November. An
atmospheric river affected the area on the 14th and 15th, and the
Medford Airport recorded 1.75" of rain with this event on the
15th. This value was just shy of breaking the daily rainfall total
record for November 15th. The current record stands at 1.78" set
in 1966.

Following this atmospheric river event, the weather pattern
remained active as a few more systems moved through. During
Thanksgiving week, however, the progression of systems began to
slow and the last week or so of the month saw periods of ridging
alternating with weak fronts at times. This led to periods of
stagnant air in the valleys as well as persistent valley fog and
low clouds, especially west of the Cascades. There were a few days
where the fog and low clouds never cleared from the Rogue Valley
and this led to well below normal daytime temperatures. Upper
level ridging persisted during the last few days of the month
except for the last day of the month. A weak front moved through
the area and while this wasn`t a big rain maker like previous
systems (Medford Airport on recorded 0.04"), it did help to break
up the stagnant air in the valley.

The average temperature for the month was 43.8 degrees, which is
0.9 degrees below normal. The average maximum temperature was
51.8 degrees, which is 1.2 degrees below normal. The average
minimum temperature was 35.7 degrees, which is 0.7 degrees below
normal. The highest temperature for the month was 77 degrees
which occurred on the 4th. The lowest temperature for the month
was 22 degrees which occurred on the 9th.

There were 6 clear days, 7 partly cloudy days, and 17 cloudy
days.

Total precipitation for the month was 3.26 inches which is 0.24
inches above normal. Total precipitation for the water year
(beginning October 1st) is 3.42 inches which is 0.73 inches below
normal. Calendar year precipitation is 12.32 inches which is 2.54
inches below normal.

The average wind speed for the month was 2.5 mph. The fastest
recorded two-minute wind speed was 30 mph from the west which
occurred on the 13th. The peak wind was 40 mph from the west
which also occurred on the 13th.

The highest pressure for the month was 30.51 inches on the 30th.
The lowest pressure for the month was 29.50 inches on the 17th.

Records:
New high temperature record on the 4th. 77 degrees breaks the old
record of 73 degrees set in 1949.

1.75" of rain on the 15th was the second greatest daily rainfall
total for the 15th.
