Note: The Gulf of Mexico Region Interactive Mapping System was an Internet based Geographic Information System designed to provide users with online mapping capability. The Gulf of Mexico Region IMS was defunded in 2007, and can no longer be accessed.

The entire Gulf of Mexico Integrated Science group of websites, data, libraries, and interactive mapping systems (IMS) is a legacy site and is no longer funded by the U.S. Geological Survey. Much of the data and resources were transferred to the Tampa Bay Estuary Atlas (http://www.wateratlas.org). Users are referred to the Tampa Bay Estuary website for data and resources on the Tampa Bay estuary.

The Gulf of Mexico region is defined by environmental and economic conditions that transcend state and country boundaries, representing a host of critical integrating and conflicting factors such as mineral resources, fisheries production, ecological habitats for marine life and waterfowl, and human demands with subsequent anthropologic impacts. There has been an increasing need for information in the region to assist with such issues.

The goal of this IMS was to to provide a comprehensive collection of U. S. Geological Survey’s hydrologic, geologic, biologic, and spatial information for onshore and offshore ecosystems through a database-driven Internet system.
