“The Shadow Internet That’s 100 Times Faster Than Google Fiber,” Wired, 6/17/2014, mentions the High End Computer Networking Team’s 91-gigabit-per-second transfer between Denver and GSFC last November as “the fastest end-to-end data transfer ever conducted under ‘real world’ conditions”. SVS visualization wins NSF/Science magazine award

A jury appointed by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Science magazine has selected "Excerpt from Dynamic Earth" as the winner of the 2013 NSF International Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge for the Video category. This animation will be highlighted in the February 2014 special section of Science and will be hosted on ScienceMag.org and NSF.gov.

Tom Maxwell receives Ultra-scale Visualization Climate Data Analysis Tools (UVCDAT) consortium award

At last week's Ultra-scale Visualization Climate Data Analysis Tools / Earth Science Grid Federation (UVCDAT/ESGF) Face-to-Face meeting in the San Francisco area, Tom Maxwell (606.2/CSC) was presented with an award for 'Outstanding Contributions to the Development of UV-CDAT'. The director of the Ultra-scale Visualization Climate Data Analysis Tools (UVCDAT) consortium, Dean Williams, presented the award.

HECN group achieves record network data transfer rate

At SuperComputing 2013 in Denver, Colorado, the High End Computer Networking (HECN, 606.1) Team achieved a record network data transfer rate of over 91 Gigabits per second (Gbps) for a disk-to-disk file transfer between a single pair of high performance RAID servers across a 100 Gbps Wide Area Network (WAN), with one server located at SC13 and the other at NASA Goddard. This record was made possible by collaborating with the Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX), the Department of Energy's ESnet, Brocade, the University of Chicago's Laboratory for Advanced Computing (LAC), and Northwestern University's International Center for Advanced Internet Research (iCAIR).

Planet on Fire on NASA Viz iPad app

The story “Planet on Fire” went live in the NASA Visualization Explorer iPad app on March 7. It showcases a global tour of fires from the MODIS instruments aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites and the GEOS-5/GOCART models run by the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO, 610.1) on the NASA Center for Climate Simulation (NCCS, 606.2) Discover supercomputer. The story has received over 131,700 hits. The story content is available on the Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS, 606.4) website.

James Tilton to recieve American Astronautical Society’s 2012 Lloyd V. Berkner Award

James C. Tilton was recently selected to receive the American Astronautical Society’s 2012 Lloyd V. Berkner Award, “In recognition of his efforts in commercial utilization of space technology, specifically for the commercial utilization of his Recursive Hierarchical Segmentation (RHSEG) software.” Dr. Tilton will be presented with this award at the Awards Luncheon to be held on March 20 at the Greenbelt Marriott, in conjunction with the 51st Robert H. Goddard Memorial Symposium.

NCCS doubles computational capacity available to researchers

In late October 2012, the NCCS doubled the computational capacity it provides for SMD researchers by completing installation of 480 Intel Xeon Sandy Bridge nodes, and installing 240 Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors (Many Integrated Core, MIC) on its Discover Linux Cluster. With the addition of another 240 Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors in early November, Discover's peak capacity will exceed 1 PetaFLOP, poising the system to accommodate greater numbers of climate simulation ensemble members and the very fine resolutions required to investigate problems such as the effects of regional weather events on seasonal climate.

Jim Tilton wins 2011 R&D; 100 Award

We congratulate Dr. James C. Tilton (Code 606.3) on receiving R&D; Magazine's 2011 R&D; 100 Award at the 49th Annual R&D; 100 Awards Ceremony in Orlando, FL on October 13. Dr. Tilton was recognized in conjunction with Bartron Medical Imaging, Inc. for the development of MED-SEG, a software tool that receives medical images and data from various imaging sources. The R&D; 100 Awards, widely recognized as the "Oscars of Innovation," identifies and celebrates the top high technology products of the year, such as sophisticated testing equipment, innovative new materials, chemistry breakthroughs, biomedical products, consumer items and high-energy physics. The R&D; 100 Awards spans industry, academia, and government-sponsored research.

User Support Success Story: Optimizing the Geodesic Application

SIVO staff (Maharaja Pandian and Tom Clune) have assisted a NASA Center for Climate Simulation user by optimizing the performance of his Geodesic application, which is used to visualize satellite rainfall data by mapping the data onto a representation of the Earth's surface. In its initial form, the code took over a week to map a complete set of data at its highest resolution. After profiling several scenarios, SIVO implemented three separate performance enhancements in the application, yielding a net 88 fold reduction in execution time -- an improvement of nearly two orders of magnitude. Further optimizations may become necessary as the user pushes to even higher resolutions for certain categories of data.
