USGS IN YOUR STATE

USGS Water Science Centers are located in each state.

Water-Quality Information and Data

Water-quality conditions are continuously monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at over 40 stations across the state of South Carolina. Parameters including temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and oxidation-reduction potential are generally recorded on 15-minute intervals. These data are transmitted via satellite to the National Water Information System (NWIS) database. From that database, the data are made publicly available on the USGS NWIS Web.

Many of the water-quality monitors operated by the USGS in South Carolina are located along the coast. Monitoring the water quality of the freshwater supply in the estuarine environment and tracking the freshwater/saltwater interface are areas of importance to many local, state and federal agencies as well as the general public.

Additional water quality monitors are located in the mid-state area. These monitors are used to ensure proper management of South Carolina rivers and reservoirs. Adequate flows must be maintained to ensure good water quality. Water managers use the monitors for purposes including: reservoir management, public water supply, regulation compliance and recreational purposes.
