Long-Term Agroecosystem Research Data Overview

The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Long-Term Agroecosystem Research network consists of 18 Federal and university agricultural research sites with an average of over 50 years of history. The goal of this research network is to ensure sustained crop and livestock production and ecosystem services from agroecosystems, and to forecast and verify the effects of environmental trends, public policies, and emerging technologies.

Display Options

Click on the LTAR sites on the map to see more information about each site. Other national ecosystem research networks are available on the map to show how LTAR contributes to nation-wide coverage. The map also links for LTAR data available through the Ameriflux, Soil Climate Analysis Network, and PhenoCam research data networks. Watershed and Ag Statistical District details only visible as you zoom in. Shaded relief base maps are recommended for browsing since color imagery base maps can make other layer symbols difficult to see

Overview

There are two tools, Swiper and Spy View, for you to compare information about the same area from two different sources or images. The sources/images are selected from the lists in the top left and right corners.

With the Swiper, you move a vertical dividing line with one image/source on the left and the other on the right
With the Spy View, the display shows the image/source from the left list. A movable square viewer shows the corresponding portion of the image/source from the right.

How to select images or GIS layers to compare

Select different images/layers from the two dropdown lists at the top of the window. The one chosen on the left will be shown with blue borders. The one on the right with a red border.

Compare using "Swiper"

Move the slider (dot or bar) in the grey bar at the bottom to shift the dividing line over the area of interest. The red and blue progress lines show where the swiper is. The black dividing line shows where comparison is about to happen as you move the sliding bar.

Compare using the "Spy View"

The left (blue) image is displayed. Move the mouse (or your finger) over the image and a red square will replace the image within the square with the right (red) layer. To to change the size of the square, use the up and down button on your keyboard.

What do different color represent?

To make it easier to tell what part of the display shows the layers selected on the left and right, the list border, image boundaries, spy view, and swiper progress lines are all color coded. Left is always blue, and right is always red.
