  • ABOUT NY EASTERN PROBATION

Welcome to Eastern District of New York Probation

The U.S. Probation Department is the community corrections arm of the federal court system.  Our employees include probation officers, information technology specialists, budget and procurement personnel, human resources professionals, and support staff, all of whom are committed to protecting the public and assisting in the fair administration of justice.

Probation offices are located in 93 of the 94 federal judicial districts nationwide, which include the U.S. territories. (Probation services for the District of the Northern Mariana Islands are provided by the District of Guam.)  The U.S. Probation Department for the Eastern District of New York services five counties located to the east and southeast of New York City, including: Kings County, Queens County, Richmond County, Nassau County and Suffolk County.

Probation officers play an integral role in the criminal justice process by investigating and supervising individuals charged with, and convicted of, federal crimes.  In the Eastern District of New York, probation officers are assigned to one of two units: the Presentence Investigation Unit or the Supervision Unit.

Officers assigned to the Presentence Investigation Unit are charged with the responsibility of conducting a thorough investigation of individuals who plead guilty to or are convicted of committing federal crimes.  This investigation includes gathering important information about the offender’s personal history as well as the offense of conviction.  Upon completion of an investigation, an officer assigned to the Presentence Investigation Unit prepares a report that is used by the Court to fashion an appropriate sentence and to set conditions for any future supervision.

Officers assigned to the Supervision Unit are responsible for monitoring all convicted offenders sentenced to probation or released to the community on supervised release following a period of incarceration.  The Supervision Unit is also responsible for supervising those offenders who are still under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Parole Commission or who have been released to the community on military parole.
