Leonard R. Olijar became the Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) in May 2015, after serving as BEP’s Deputy Director from 2012 through 2014.  The mission of the BEP is to develop and produce U.S. currency, trusted worldwide.  Mr. Olijar is currently leading BEP through a major reorganization, a complete recapitalization, and a quality transformation moving from quality inspection to quality assurance.  As Deputy Director, Mr. Olijar was responsible for overseeing all operational activities at BEP. 

Mr. Olijar began his career at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in 1988 as a Systems Accountant and rapidly advanced.  In 2002, Mr. Olijar successfully led the BEP to meet a challenge from the Secretary of the Treasury to close the financial books within two days and complete the year-end audit in seven days, matching the best in the private sector.  In 2006, Mr. Olijar was appointed the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of BEP.  Under Mr. Olijar’s leadership, BEP performed BEP-wide risk assessments and began the implementation of a Lean Six Sigma program to improve customer service and efficiency.  Mr. Olijar served as the executive sponsor for BEP’s Best Place to Work initiative and the BEP was recognized as one of the most improved agencies in 2012.

 

Mr. Olijar graduated magna cum laude from the University of Colorado in 1987.  He received the Gold Medal Award for the highest score in Virginia on the Certified Public Accountant Exam and scored in the top one percent in the nation.  Mr. Olijar resides in northern Virginia with his wife and two daughters.
