Promoting school readiness for children and families
Introduction

Head Start promotes school readiness for low-income children and families by offering educational, nutritional, health, social and other services. Head Start programs enhance the social and cognitive development of children, ages 3 to 5, and actively engage families in their children's learning so that children will be successful in kindergarten.

Early Head Start provides early, continuous, intensive, and comprehensive child development and family support services to low-income infants and toddlers and their families, and pregnant women and their families.

Head Start and Early Head Start serve over a million children and their families each year in all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Territories, including many American Indian and migrant children.
