Overview

Deployment Health Assessments (DHAs) are legislatively required assessments conducted at specific timeframes in the pre and post deployment process to identify health concerns. The DHA process supports the DoD health protection strategy to deploy healthy, fit, and medically-ready forces; minimize illnesses and injuries during deployments; and evaluate and treat physical and psychological problems following deployment. The process is designed to identify stress injuries, and other health concerns, that require further assessment or treatment as appropriate. The Sailor submits the DHA online utilizing the eDHA application which is then reviewed and completed during a one-on-one conversation with a trained health care provider.

DHAs are required for Sailors when they either deploy OCONUS with duties ashore greater than 30 days without a fixed Military Treatment Facility (MTF) (i.e. Tricare Facility); or the COCOM, service component commander, or commander exercising operational control requires the assessments based on a health risk assessment. Current COCOM requirements are:

  1. CENTCOM MOD 12 DHA requirement for anyone traveling to or through the USCENTCOM area of responsibility (AOR), with time in country for a period of greater than 30 days. Personnel who are PCS'ed or are stationed in Bahrain are exempt.

  2. SOUTHCOM DHA requirement for JTF GTMO.

Note: Personnel who deploy on ships are specifically excluded from this requirement unless they meet the referenced guidelines.
