More Laboratory News »The Mesoscale Atmospheric Processes Laboratory investigates the physics and dynamics of atmospheric processes using remote-sensing data and high-resolution numerical simulations. Key areas of research are cloud and precipitation systems and their impact on regional and global climate. State-of-the-art cloud-resolving models are developed and applied at local to regional to global scales.
The Laboratory plays a key science leadership role in the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM), launched in 1997 and still operating, and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, launched in 2014. Another central focus is developing remote-sensing technology and methods to measure aerosols, clouds, precipitation, water vapor, and winds, especially using active remote sensing (lidar and radar).
