SHOUT Underway at Wallops
09/02/2016
Scott Braun (612) is participating as a mission scientist during the NOAA Sensing Hazards with Operational Unmanned Technology (SHOUT) experiment at Wallops Flight Facility. SHOUT is using the NASA Global Hawk to conduct operational flights over Atlantic Hurricanes to evaluate the impact of the airborne and sensor technologies in operational hurricane forecasts. SHOUT is using three of the NASA Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) payloads including the Goddard HIWRAP Doppler radar, the JPL HAMSR microwave sounder, and NOAA dropsonde system. Flights in the past week include two over Hurricane Gaston in the Atlantic and one over Tropical Depression 9 in the Gulf of Mexico.
Starting next week, we begin the Olympic Mountain Experiment, or OLYMPEX. It is a NASA-led field campaign, which will take place from November 2015 through February 2016.
Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) Deputy Project Manager George Hufman discusses the science community's use of GPM data. (Note: Subscription required to access article.)
Three Goddard Space Flight Center instruments, the Goddard Laboratory for Winds (Bruce Gentry), the X-badger radar (Amber Emory), and the ALVICE mobile laboratory (David Whiteman), were involved in the Plains Elevated Convection at Night (PECAN) field campaign.
Bruce Gentry and his team are participating in a flight campaign experiment over Greenland involving the Tropospheric Wind Lidar Technology Experiment (TwiLite).
Dr. Amber Emory was featured on the Annapolis radio station WNAV for an hour-long interview "Understanding the Earth from Space: What We've Learned from NASA." She discussed her research as a radar meteorologist, some of her field campaign work, and the future for understanding fresh water resources from space.
A recent article in The Baltimore Sun focused on members of the Earth Sciences Division and their work at Goddard Space Flight Center.
