Soldier Support Institute Vision

SSI, as the Army's Soldier Support Integration Command strives to fully integrate within the Sustainment War Fighting Function by providing state of the art education and training to Soldiers and Civilians, developing adaptive leaders and building capabilities across the Human Resource and Financial Management domains in order to strengthen an all volunteer U.S. Army as America’s force of decisive action.

COL Richard J. Nieberding Jr. Commander Soldier Support Institute

Colonel Richard (Rick) J. Nieberding, Jr was born in Covington, Kentucky. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1987. He also earned a Masters in Leadership Development from Long Island University in 1996 and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College in 2007. He completed Combined Arms Staff Services School in 1995 and Command and General Staff College in 2002.

Upon commissioning in 1987, Colonel Nieberding attended the Armor Officer Basic Course and was assigned to 197th Infantry Brigade, Fort Benning, Georgia where he served as Tank Platoon Leader and Scout Platoon Leader in Alpha Troop, 15th Cavalry and Tank Company XO in 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor during OPERATION DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM. After the Armor Officer Advanced Course in 1992, he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division. His positions included 5th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Personnel Officer, Troop Commander, and Assistant Squadron S3. In 1996 he was assigned to the United States Military Academy and served as a Company Tactical Officer, a Battalion Tactical Officer, and the Executive Officer to the Brigade Tactical Officer. After serving at West Point, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 395th Regiment, 5th Army at Fort Hood, Texas where he served as Battalion Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer. In 2001, he re-designated to Functional Area 43 (Human Resources) and was assigned to 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He served as Brigade S1, Division Support Command and as the Division Deputy G1. He remained at Fort Hood and in 2003 was assigned to III Corps as the Field Grade Officer Manager. In 2004 he deployed with III Corps to OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and served as the Chief, Soldier Programs for Multi-National Corps- Iraq. Upon redeployment in 2005, he was assigned to Third US Army and served as the Adjutant General. After graduation from US Army War College in 2007, he was assigned to 1st Armored Division, Wiesbaden, Germany as the Division G1 and served a 15 month deployment OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM (Multi-National Division-North). After redeployment, he was assigned to US Army Human Resources Command in 2009 as the Chief, Leader Development Division. In 2010, he moved to I Corps, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA and was assigned as the I Corps G1. He deployed to Afghanistan (OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM) with I Corps and served as International Security Assistance Force-Afghanistan Strategic Force Manager. He served as, Chief, Colonels Management in 2012. He assumed his current position, Commander, US Army Soldier Support Institute, 9 September 2015.

Colonel Nieberding’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal (1OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (7 OLC), Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (4 OLC), Southwest Asia Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, NATO Medal (Afghanistan), Saudi Arabian-Kuwait Liberation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, and the Ranger Tab.

COL Nieberding is married with two sons.

Financial Management School

Provide trained, ready, and agile military and civilian Leaders and develop complementary concepts, doctrine, organization, and material across the spectrum of Financial Management (FM) in support of America's Armed Forces in war and peace.

Army School of Music

Army Band Mission "The Army School of Music trains and educates Army band Soldiers and leaders; designs, develops and implements training; integrates unit capabilities, concepts and doctrine in order to build Army bands that are versatile and adaptable in Full Spectrum Operations."

Non Commissioned Officer Academy

Train and educate noncommissioned officers through relevant, objective evaluation to support ARFORGEN; growing adaptive leaders fostered in an environment that facilitates competence, confidence, creativity, and team-building to achieve success in any operating environment.
