State law (Public Resource Code 4789) requires the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) to periodically assess California's forest and rangeland resources. The Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP) of CDF performs the assessment in cooperation with federal, state and local agencies, public and private organizations, and California's academic research community.

  • The flagship product of the assessment is The Changing California: Forest and Range 2003 Assessment Summary. This is a 250 page document summarizing information from the On-Line Technical Reports and frames the policy issues and options for consideration by the California State Board of Forestry and Fire Protection.

    Publication Status: The summary is available online. Published hard copies of the summary are available by request.

On-line Technical Reports

  • The foundation of the Assessment is a comprehensive series of reports on over 30 topics evaluating environmental, economic and social conditions related to California’s forest and rangeland resource sustainability.

    Publication Status: Most reports are available online.

Information and Data Center

  • Information systems include databases, GIS data, and maps providing detailed information for statewide, bioregional, county, and watershed analyses.
