Electric Drive Washington

Washington State has many economical sources of renewable energy. This provides great opportunities for our state transportation system. Using electric vehicles, we increase the efficiency of our electricity grid system, send less money out of state for fuels, lower driver costs, and help local technology innovation and business activity. Transportation in our state is responsible for large amounts of air pollution and almost half of all the greenhouse gas emissions. With one of the cleanest electricity supplies of any state, we can greatly reduce our pollution as more people adopt plug-in vehicles.

EV Information for Consumers

Electric vehicles are a great alternative to meet daily transportation needs efficiently and effectively. Many vehicle manufacturers have electric cars in their production.

How do I know it’s an electric car?

Vehicles with an external plug and batteries, including all-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are considered electric vehicles. However, hybrid electric vehicles which solely use regenerative braking systems to create electric power that supports an internal combustion engine are not considered to be electric vehicles.

Fuel Savings

Users of electric vehicles enjoy large savings in fuel costs. In our state the cost to drive 100 miles with an EV is about $1.50, compared to about $10.00 - $12.00 for a typical fuel efficient gasoline car. For many users, fuel and maintenance savings may offset the higher purchase price for the electric vehicle.

Total Cost of Ownership

After adding the fuel savings, maintenance and other savings, the total cost of owning a plug-in vehicle over a 5- to 10-year period is competitive with many gas-powered cars. But don’t just take our word for it. Check out it out for yourself.
