On the pages linked below you will find out how DNR sells state trust land timber, and how we market timber and other forest products to earn income to build our public schools, universities, state mental hospitals and other institutions and to help fund local services in many counties. These diverse forests across the state offer many ways to generate income while providing fish and wildlife habitat and recreation and educational opportunities for the public.

 

Currently, all DNR-managed forested state trust lands in Washington state (2.1 million acres) are certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program Forest Management Standard. About 172,000 acres of those forested state trust lands are also certified under the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) US Forest Management Standard. These FSC-certified forests are located within DNR’s South Puget Habitat Conservation Plan Planning Unit (located in King, Pierce, Thurston, Lewis, Kitsap, and Mason counties). DNR will manage timber harvests from forested state trust lands in a manner consistent with accepted best practices for sustainability and demonstrate that through third-party certification. DNR is working with FSC to generate more direct benefit to trust beneficiaries from FSC certification which could justify expansion of the program to more forested state trust lands.
