Adult Education and Literacy Services - Workforce Development & Adult Learning
Adult Education and Literacy Services is an integral part of the Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning, providing instruction in basic academic skills, workforce preparation, and English Language acquisition, along with high school diploma options for adult residents of Maryland.
Instruction
Classes are offered in all Maryland counties and Baltimore City. Instruction is available for anyone over age 17 who is not currently enrolled in high school. Individuals can enroll in classes to increase their basic reading, math, and writing skills or learn the English Language, prepare for the GED® tests, and increase their readiness for work or job advancement.

Federal support for adult instructional services is provided by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act which creates a partnership with States to jointly fund the Adult Education activities.
Earn Your Maryland High School Diploma
In addition to adult instructional services, the Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning provides GED® testing for Maryland residents who have not earned a high school diploma. Test candidates must be at least 17 years old and not enrolled in school.
The National External Diploma Program® (NEDP) is an applied performance assessment system that assesses the high school level skills of adults and out-of-school youth. The NEDP evaluates the reading, writing, math, and workforce readiness skills of participants in life and work contexts.
Successful completers of both GED® and NEDP programs earn a Maryland High School Diploma.
