Frequently Asked Questions

What is iTrust and why do I need to use it?

iTrust is NIH’s single sign-on solution. It allows Non-NIH users to log in with their own social login account or with an account from a supported research organization.

NCI's previous login system had reached end of life, was becoming increasingly difficult to support and maintain, and was out of compliance with HHS security policies. In response, NCI adopted NIH’s iTrust solution as the preferred login method for non-sensitive applications open to members of the public.

During a brief transition period, both systems were available for use. However, now that the old login system has been retired, all users must log in using iTrust.

What happened to my old account and data?

If you're a non-NIH user who previously had an NCI login username and password to access this system, and your account was active as of December 18, 2016, we have saved your account information and can transfer it to a federated account of your choice.

To transfer your account access and preferences to a federated account, please visit the NCI User Registration Portal. You will need to provide your previous login username and the e-mail address that you used when you first set up your account. You will need to provide the username and e-mail address we have on file for you. If the username and e-mail combination you provide is valid, we will send a confirmation code to that e-mail address, and you will need to click on the enclosed link to prove you are the owner of that e-mail address. When you've confirmed your e-mail, we will ask you to log in to iTrust using an available research organization or social login provider. Once you do that, we will link your old NCI username to your new federated account and transfer your access from your old NCI login account to your new federated account. Your in-app username and preferences will stay the same.

I can't remember my username or e-mail address, or my e-mail address has changed and I can't access the old one. Can I still register?

If you're having trouble registering using the automated system, we can help find the required information for you or update your e-mail address in the system so you can register. Please reach out to the NCI CBIIT Application Support team at ncicbiit@mail.nih.gov and they will be happy to help.

I’m a new user. How can I get access?

If you are a Non-NCI user who never had an NCI login username and password, please request access using the Access Request Form. When prompted, log in to iTrust using the federated account you wish to use to access this application. We will assign a new NCI username for you. It may take up to two business days for us to process your new access request. If you want to use a different e-mail address for NCI correspondence than the one associated with your federated account (for example, a work e-mail address instead of your personal Google e-mail address) please include that information in the Justification section of the request and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

What kind of login accounts can I use?

Federated login providers available for use with NIH iTrust are currently limited to InCommon-participating research organizations (link is external) and Google (link is external). Facebook and Microsoft Live login options are coming to NIH iTrust in early 2017.

Please note that not all InCommon-participating research organizations are compatible with this application. The only ones currently available for login to this application are:

If your organization is not on this list, please register using a social login account. If you previously registered with a research organization account that’s not on this list and are having trouble logging on, please contact the NCI CBIIT Application Support team at ncicbiit@mail.nih.gov and they will help you transfer your registration to a social login account until your organization’s login system is fully integrated with iTrust.

I registered using one account or provider and I'm having trouble using it. Can I switch to a different account or provider?

Yes. You can transfer your access from one social login or research organization account to another. You may need to do this if you change jobs or schools but still wish to keep your access to NCI apps, if you share a computer with someone else and accidentally registered with the wrong social account, or if the login provider you originally registered with isn’t working properly with iTrust. Please contact the NCI CBIIT Application Support team at ncicbiit@mail.nih.gov and they will be happy to assist you.

What options should I select on the iTrust login page?

It depends on the type of account you have:

If you're an NCI staff member or an NIH user in another IC who has been granted access to this application, select Account Type: HHS Users and log in wth your NIH domain username and password or your NIH PIV card.

If you registered using a research organization account, select Account Type: Research Organizations and select the organization you used when you registered. You will be redirected your organization's login portal. Once you've signed in successfully, you'll be logged in to this application

If you registered with a social login account (e.g., Google), select Account Type: Social Login/OpenID, and select your social account provider. You will be taken to the social login provider's login portal. Once you've signed in successfully, you'll be logged in to this application

I have an eRA Commons or NIH External (NIHEXT) account. Can I log in with that?

We cannot accept eRA Commons or NIHEXT login accounts at this time due to technical and management limitations. Please use a federated login account from a supported research organization or a social login provider to access this application.
