Geographic Information Server

The WVDEP GIS server provides access to geographical information for agency personnel and the public. Information is made available in several ways. Web mapping applications typically are designed for either 1) exploration and visualization of data organized around a particular theme (e.g. mining) or 2) performing a specific task and getting needed information quickly, like flow estimates, or coordinate transformation. Data download links provide direct access to GIS data created and maintained by the agency in a common format. Most data is updated Mon-Fri. Web services provide geographical data to a variety of clients, including desktop GIS software, mobile apps, and 3rd party web applications that run in a browser. Services are quickly becoming the preferred means of using and combining geographical information from multiple authoritative sources.
