The ISE mission is to:

• Advance responsible information sharing to further counterterrorism, homeland security, and counter weapons of mass destrcution missions.

• Improve nationwide decision making by transforming from information ownership to stewardship

• Promote partnerships across federal, state, local, and tribal governments, the private sector, and internationally

 

The ISE drives mission progress along two core focus areas:

• Integrating stakeholders into the domestic nexus of national security and public safety

• Enhancing core information sharing frameworks developed, refined, and tested through more than a decade of terrorism-related information sharing

Over the last several years, the Office of the Program Manager for the Information Sharing Environment (PM-ISE) has worked with Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources (CIKR) community partners in support of national security, public safety, and economic resilience. PM-ISE’s stewardship, information sharing technical expertise, advocacy efforts, and policy and governance tools in support of partners’ information sharing needs have contributed to the improvement of information sharing within the public domain.

Effective national security requires anticipating threats and threat environments. It is not enough to work to solve today’s information sharing challenges. Part of the Office of the Program Manager for the Information Sharing Environment’s (PM-ISE) role in accelerating information sharing is imagining what information sharing will look like -- and what sharing challenges the world will face -- in the future.

A considerable hurdle in information sharing is establishing trust and interoperability among the two or more organizations that want to share information. Expressions of intent and the use of open systems technologies alone do not provide the requisite infrastructure for information sharing to occur. Organizations look for assurances that partners with whom they wish to share are indeed implementing policies and standards in a manner worthy of trust and that support interoperability before information sharing can occur.
