Do I need to register my Unmanned Aircraft?

You need to register your aircraft if it weighs between 0.55 lbs. (250 grams) and up to 55 lbs. (25 kg)

You will be subject to civil and criminal penalties if you meet the criteria to register an unmanned aircraft and do not register.

You must use the paper (N-number) registration process if

  • Your unmanned aircraft is 55 pounds or greater
  • You want to qualify a small unmanned aircraft for operation outside the United States
  • You hold title to an aircraft in trust
  • The small unmanned aircraft owner uses a voting trust to meet U.S. Citizenship requirements

The authority for collecting personally identifiable information (PII) through the Small Unmanned Aircraft Registration Service website is contained in 49 U.S.C. 44101–44106 and 44110–44113 which require aircraft to be registered as a condition of operation and establish the requirements for registration and registration processes. The principal purpose for which information collected is intended to be used is to complete the aircraft registration process and identify the aircraft to its owner. The failure to provide the required information will prevent the FAA from registering your aircraft which is required by 49 U.S.C. 44101 to be completed prior to operation of the aircraft. The information collected to complete the aircraft registration process and issue the unique identifier is included in a Privacy Act System of Records known as DOT/FAA 801, titled “Aviation Registration Records.” Records from this system of records may be disclosed in accordance with the routine uses that appear in Department of Transportation (DOT)/FAA 801, available at https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/privacy/privacy-act-system-records-notices.

Paperwork Reduction Act Burden Statement

A federal agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not required to respond to, nor shall a person be subject to a penalty for failure to comply with a collection of information subject to the requirements of the Paperwork Reduction Act unless that collection of information displays a currently valid OMB Control Number.
