On the morning of October 4, 2016, Hurricane Matthew passed over the island nation of Haiti. A Category 4 storm, it made landfall around 7 a.m. local time (5 a.m. PDT/8 a.m. EDT) with sustained winds over 145 mph. This is the strongest hurricane to hit Haiti in over 50 years.
These data were acquired during Terra orbit 89345. Other MISR data are available through the NASA Langley Research Center.
Here is a side-by-side comparison of views of our planet Earth taken from two different vantage points over more than four decades apart. The iconic "Blue Marble" view on the left was taken 43 years ago on December 7, 1972 from Apollo 17 on its way to the Moon. The view on the right is from Lagrangian Point L1, located approximately one million miles away from earth (about four times farther than the moon) and was provided by the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) sensor affixed to the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR).
Updated MISR Level 3 Imagery tool now contains data for 2009 - 2015. The Level 3 products are derived from averaging select Level 1 and Level 2 parameters over daily, monthly, seasonal and annual time periods. All MISR data products can also be ordered through the MISR Order and Customization Tool.
The Toolsets for Airborne Data (TAD), developed at the Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) to promote the airborne data use, is now available. This beta-release is an intuitive user interface for variable selection across different airborne field studies and includes features to create merge files based on a user’s choice of time base. The Cloud-Aerosol Transport System (CATS) is a lidar remote sensing payload utilizing ISS as an affordable Earth Science observing platform. CATS provides in-space demonstration of technologies for future satellite missions while demonstrating build-to-cost project development with streamlined management structure.
On NASA's Suomi NPP satellite, the newest version of the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) instrument is scanning Earth, helping to assure availability of measurements of the energy leaving the Earth-atmosphere system. The CERES results help scientists to determine the Earth's energy balance, providing a long-term record of this crucial environmental parameter that will be consistent with those of its predecessors.
Processing and deliveries of the MOPITT Version 5 products concluded at the end of 2016. Users of V5 products are encouraged to instead begin using the V7 product.
A number of Version 3 CALIPSO science data products rely on the GEOS 5 FP-IT meteorological data stream of near-real-time assimilation products provided by NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO).
