LIS on TRMM

The colored areas in this image show lightning flashes detected by LIS on NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) over 16 years. The most flashes are over land (black: >7000) and the fewest are over the ocean (pink: <10). TRMM LIS data ceased when TRMM lost orbit in June 2015.

LIS Heads to the ISS

A Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) is scheduled for installation on the International Space Station (ISS) in February 2017. The ISS orbit yields an increased lightning detection region, shown in dark gray, which will provide lightning observations in the important mid-latitude storm regions.

About EOSDIS

The Earth Observing System Data and Information System is a key core capability in NASA’s Earth Science Data Systems Program. It provides end-to-end capabilities for managing NASA’s Earth science data from various sources—satellites, aircraft, field measurements, and various other programs.
