Brain Imaging Study Of Cocaine Addiction

What is the purpose of the study?
The purpose of the study is to look at how the brain responds to expected pleasant events.

Who can participate in the study?
This study is accepting men and women who:

  • Are 18 to 45 years of age
  • Are dependent on cocaine
  • May occasionally use alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs

Healthy volunteers who do not currently use cocaine are also needed for this study.

What will participants be asked to do?
There will be five study visits over two weeks, some of which will include overnight stays on an inpatient research unit. There will also be three follow-up visits.

Participants will:

  • Have four MRI brain scans while performing reward tasks
  • Complete questionnaires
  • Provide blood and urine samples
  • Receive study drug

Where is the study taking place?
The NIDA Intramural Research Program is located on the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus in east Baltimore.

How much does it cost?
There is no cost for participation.

Will I receive payment of some kind?
All study participants will receive money for their participation in this study.
