CARSON CITY – When personal financial counselor Norman Sligar talks, Guardsmen should listen.

One of the newest additions to the military and family support services staff, Sligar works full-time advising military personnel, military dependents and veterans in northern Nevada on financial affairs, including retirement planning and debt management. Sligar’s services are free and confidential; he is a government contractor employed by Zeiders Enterprises.

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- An atmospheric river that blasted the Sierra Nevada mountain range this week flooded much of western Nevada and resulted in the activation of dozens of Nevada National Guard Soldiers.

Nevada Guardsmen transported potable water, prepared evacuations and even helped with snow removal, for much of the state’s most vulnerable citizens living in rural parts of the flood zone.

Perez, 35, of Reno, is the lone certified drill sergeant in the entire Nevada Army Guard. With a mixture of mentorship, motivation and guidance, he prepares all of the Nevada Guard’s newly-recruited privates for their future training.

FALLON, Nev. -- After years of false hopes and disappointments from Congress, military personnel with at least 20 years of service who did not spend more than 179 consecutive days on federal active duty received good news from both Congress and the president just before the Christmas holiday. President Barack Obama signed into law on Dec. 16 legislation known as the Jeff Miller and Richard Blumenthal Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2016 that grants veteran status for National Guard soldiers and airmen and reservists from all branches of service.
