February 17, 2017 Fire activity continues in the Southern Area where 17 new large fires were reported. Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, and New Mexico also reported new large fires. Firefighters met management goals on 23 large fires this week. Weather: More than a foot of rain is expected across portions of the mountains across Northern California through Tuesday night as a series of wet and warm systems move on shore once again elevating flooding concerns. Critical fire weather conditions may be possible Saturday across West Texas and New Mexico as a breezy, dry Southerly flow develops. Florida may see minor drought relief Saturday and again Thursday as a pair of wet frontal systems track southeast across the state. The Central and Southern Plains will continue to be warm and dry except Monday night and Tuesday when a fast moving front provides rain to mainly Texas and Oklahoma. Southern Missouri and Southeastern Kansas could see some moisture as well. The Central Northern Rockies and the Pacific Northwest will remain entrenched in an overall cool and wet pattern that will promote continued snow pack accrual. The Northern Plains and New England should be mostly warm and dry through the period. Alaska will receive needed snowfall as a pair of systems impact the state this weekend and again late next week.
