The Research, Condition, and Disease Categorization Process

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the Nation's medical research agency. Funded by U.S. tax dollars, the NIH supports researchers throughout the country and around the world as they work to improve people's health.

The NIH recognizes the importance of keeping the American people informed about how their tax dollars are spent to support medical research.

In January 2009, the NIH added the Research, Condition, and Disease Categorization (RCDC) reports to the RePORT site. RCDC is a computerized process the NIH uses to categorize and report the amount it funded in each of 233 reported categories of disease, condition, or research area.

RCDC provides consistent and transparent information to the public about NIH-funded research, providing a complete list of all NIH-funded projects related to each category. By clicking on each of the categories, the public can access full project listings for that category and view, print, or download the detailed report.

Some of the funding amounts that RCDC reports might differ from NIH reports issued prior to FY2008. The reason for the difference is that RCDC is sorting funded research using a different method from the past. The way the NIH budgets and spends tax dollars throughout the year remains the same.
