CERC Science Topic: Endangered and At-Risk Species

shovelnose and pallid sturgeonfreshwater musselsThe preservation of endangered species and maintenance of biodiversity are major mandates for environmental science. The CERC develops databases and information on threatened and endangered aquatic organisms, such as toxicity tests conducted with at risk species of mollusks, fish and amphibians, exposed to contaminants in the laboratory or in the field, or experiencing altered habitats. The goal is to identify data gaps and gain a better understanding of the causes of population declines or extinction. When the causes of declining populations are known, solutions can be implemented to successfully manage species that are at risk.
