Nighttime Visibility

Welcome to the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Nighttime Visibility website. This site contains information about three important areas that impact nighttime visibility. Adequately maintained retroreflective signs, pavement markings, and roadway lighting improve nighttime highway visibility and reduce the risk of crashes by increasing visibility for drivers and other roadway users.

What's New: The FHWA has published a Supplemental Notice of Proposed Amendment (SNPA) to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) regarding Minimum Maintained Retroreflectivity for Pavement Markings.
