Senator Specter's office offers internships for college students wishing to truly experience life on Capitol Hill. The internship program strives to ensure that participants gain a broad perspective of the daily operations of a United States Senator's office while actively participating as a member of the staff. Interns will observe and participate in the legislative process, develop research and writing techniques and hone interpersonal skills.

Specter Interns
Internships are available during the Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters. In many cases, college students, in cooperation with their respective Universities, are able to earn class credit for their work here in Washington, D.C. Fall and Spring semester interns are required to work at least twenty hours each week, while Summer-session interns are requested to work forty hours per week. The summer internship program is divided into two sessions.

Students pursuing internships are requested to submit an online application, including your writing sample in the designated box below. When applying for an internship with Senator Specter, it is important to submit the application as early as possible, but no more than three months in advance, due to the high level of interest for all internship sessions. Interns will assist members of the staff in the following areas:

Legislation: The legislative staff helps to prepare the Senator for committee hearings, upcoming votes, issue research and meetings with constituents, government officials and interest groups. Legislative Assistants (LAs) make recommendations on legislation, draft bills and write speeches and letters on behalf of the Senator. Legislative Correspondents (LCs) are largely responsible for answering mail and aiding the LAs. All legislative staff meet regularly with constituents and interest-groups.

Press: The Press Department plans and conducts all media-related activities for the Senator.

Administration: The Administrative staff coordinates and runs the business operations of the office. Included in this department are the Administrative Assistant, Office Manager, Staff Assistants, Systems Administrators and Mailroom staff.
