The Laboratory For Energy and the Environment (LFEE) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology fosters collaboration among industry, government, academia, nongovernmental organizations, and the public to address not only the complex interrelationships between energy and the environment, but also the technological, economic, and social aspects of sustainable energy development and use.
The Lighting Research Center (LRC)
The Lighting Research Center (LRC) is part of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Since we began in 1988, we have built an international reputation as a reliable source for objective information about lighting technologies, applications, and products. Our programs cover a range of activities including both laboratory testing of lighting products and real-world demonstration and evaluation of lighting products and designs. We are the pre-eminent source of objective, timely information about lighting technologies and applications and about human response to light.
National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT)
Since 1976 the National Center for Appropriate Technology has been serving economically disadvantaged people by providing information and access to appropriate technologies that can help improve their lives.
North Carolina Solar Center
Created in 1988, the North Carolina Solar Center serves as a clearinghouse for solar and other renewable energy programs, information, research, technical assistance, and training for the citizens of North Carolina and beyond. Through its programs and services, the Solar Center seeks to stabilize energy costs for consumers, stimulate local economies, reduce dependence on foreign fuels, and mitigate the environmental impacts associated with fossil fuels.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
ORNL is a Department of Energy multiprogram laboratory managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation. Scientists and engineers at ORNL conduct a wide range of basic and applied research and development to advance in several Core Competencies the nation's energy resources, environmental quality, scientific knowledge, educational foundations, and economic competitiveness. ORNL collaborates with other federal agencies, industry, and universities. It is committed to excellence in all of its activities and operates in compliance with environmental, safety, and health laws and regulations. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Review is their quarterly magazine highlighting the research and development activities at the Laboratory, and is distributed without charge.
U.S. Dept. of Energy's Building Energy Codes Program (BECP)
DOE's Building Energy Codes Program is an information resource on national model energy codes. We work with other government agencies, state and local jurisdictions, national code organizations, and industry to promote stronger building energy codes and help states adopt, implement, and enforce those codes. The Program recognizes that energy codes maximize energy efficiency only when they are fully embraced by users and supported through education, implementation, and enforcement.
REScheck
The REScheck (formerly MECcheck) materials have been developed to simplify and clarify code compliance with the model energy code (MEC), The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and a number of state codes. From this page, you can learn more about REScheck compliance products, and download (at no cost) the complete package of software, workbooks, and manuals.
Renewable Energy Policy Project (REPP)
REPP supports the advancement of renewable energy technology through policy research. REPP seeks to define growth strategies for renewables that respond to competitive energy markets and environmental needs. Since its inception in 1995, REPP has investigated the relationship among policy, markets and public demand in accelerating the deployment of renewable energy, which include biomass, hydropower, geothermal, photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind and renewable hydrogen. The organization offers a platform from which experts in the field can examine issues of medium-to long-term importance to policy makers, green energy entrepreneurs, and environmental advocates.
Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI)
Rocky Mountain Institute is an entrepreneurial nonprofit organization that fosters the efficient and restorative use of resources to make the world secure, just, prosperous, and life-sustaining. We do this by inspiring business, civil society, and government to design integrative solutions that create true wealth.
The Solar Energy Applications Laboratory (SEAL) - Colorado State University
SEAL was established to carry out experiments in solar heating and cooling of buildings and solar water heating. The major emphasis of our solar energy research has been directed toward improving the performance of systems installed in a real-world environment so that they can reach their theoretical potential. SEAL is one of only two university laboratories that have received continuing support from the U.S. Department of Energy. More recently, SEAL's programs have expanded into other areas of building energy technology. Researchers are studying room air motion, building and HVAC simulation, short-term energy monitoring, thermal storage, and neural networks for HVAC control.
