USU Alumnus takes command of Naval Hospital Jacksonville

Capt. Bruce Gillingham assumed command of Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Fla. on Aug. 14, relieving Capt. Raquel Bono in a morning ceremony at NAS Jacksonville's Chapel. The guest speaker at the ceremony was the Navy's Deputy Surgeon General Rear Adm. Thomas R. Cullison.

Gillingham reports aboard from Naval Medical Center (NMC) Portsmouth, Va., where he was the Deputy Commander. There, he was responsible for the coordinated delivery of primary and tertiary healthcare to a patient population in excess of 400,000.

Heroic Efforts Earn Combat Action Badges

Brave leaders who risked their lives to save over a hundred others on Dec. 21, 2004 were awarded the Combat Action Badge on Aug. 12, in Falls Church, Va.

The Combat Action Badge provides special recognition to soldiers who personally engage the enemy, or who are engaged by the enemy, during combat operations. The badge depicts a bayonet and grenade that are associated with active combat and an oak wreath that symbolizes strength and loyalty. Stars may be added at the top of the wreath to designate subsequent awards; one star for the second award, two stars for the third award, and three stars for the fourth award.

Fighting for Life

A new documentary that opened in theaters on March 7, "Fighting for Life," features alumni, students, staff and faculty of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. The university is a traditional academic health center with a unique focus on military medicine and public health. USU includes a medical school with a graduate program in the biomedical sciences and a graduate school of nursing.
Fighting for Life
This powerful and emotional documentary focuses on the role USU plays in educating leaders in military medicine and looks at the care they provide to servicemen and women injured in combat. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Terry Sanders produced the documentary, which was the brainchild of Mrs. Tammy Alvarez, president of the "Friends of USU" organization. Alvarez's son, Navy Lt.
