Traveling to Ames Ames Laboratory is located on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Ames is located on Interstate 35 about 35 miles north of Des Moines and Interstate 80.
If you are flying from another part of the country, the nearest commercial airline service is at the Des Moines International Airport. To get from the airport to Ames, you may travel one of two routes to reach I-35 (see the Des Moines map below). The first route goes through downtown Des Moines to I-235 and is shorter but much more complicated and often congested, especially during peak commuting hours. It is not recommended for first-time visitors who are driving themselves. The other way is to use the Highway 5/65 Bypass which is longer but much simpler and often faster to navigate. Once in Ames, take either the Highway 30 West or the 13th Street exit to get to the Iowa State University campus.
