The Assistant Director of Information Resources and Technology Management (IRTM), and the Chief, IRTM, serve as the Service's Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Deputy CIO, respectively, and oversee the formulation of information technology (IT) policies and budget for the areas of IT strategic planning and performance reporting, IT security, IT capital planning and investment control, E-Government, enterprise architecture, IT acquisition, data standards and data management, records management, Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act compliance, systems development, operation, maintenance and disposal, geographical information systems, project management, and program management reviews and audits. They also oversee operation of the Service's wide area network, radio systems, help desk support, and various application and web hosting facilities. This office works with the Service's natural resource program and business management offices to develop, operate, and maintain IT systems that support activities in a broad range of Service programs.

This office works closely with the Department of the Interior (DOI), and other agencies of the Federal Government, in managing the Service's information resources. This office distributes external information and guidance within the Service and prepares and submits responses to external inquiries related to IT for the Service on a frequent basis. The CIO represents the agency on the DOI IT Management Council. The Deputy CIO serves as the Service Chief Technology Officer (CTO), is a member of the Deputies Group, and represents the Service on the DOI CTO Council and the DOI Working Capital Fund Consortium.
