Programs for Youth
Enriching the Lives of Youth

The U.S. Attorney’s Office works closely with the Metropolitan Police Department, DC Public Schools, Weed & Seed, and other community based organizations to develop and structure programs for youth. Community outreach is a core principal of our Community Prosecution initiative, and working with youth is a nature extension of that outreach. These programs, and those of our partner agencies, seeks to recognize the individuality and potential of every young person in our City. Through education and character development, the staff of the U.S. Attorney’s Office works to make a difference in the lives of youth in neighborhoods throughout the District of Columbia.

Some of our youth programs are described below. For additional information, please email us at: dc.outreach@usdoj.gov.

The U.S. Attorney’s Offices also works closely with community-based, non-profit organizations that offer school-based programs to students in under-served communities.  These programs provide students with academic enrichment, focused mentoring, tutoring, life skills training and other vital support that not only reduces risks of truancy and delinquency, but enhances chances for success and achievement.

DEFY
DEFY “DEFY is a community-based, youth outreach program which provides education, life skill development, and positive experiences for youth ages nine to twelve. Each year, approximately one hundred children participate in the program. The program instructs youth on drug resistance, self-esteem, gang awareness, conflict resolution and other topics which will enable them to become responsible citizens that promote drug and violence-free communities. It is a two-phase program which begins with an intensive summer leadership camp and continues through the year with a ten-month mentoring program.
