Objectives
National and international security policy is inextricably linked with technology. Successful national security policy and policy implementation via technology requires that policymakers and technologists understand the needs, capabilities, and constraints of the other. By supporting independent, multidisciplinary research that involves both the policy and technology communities and explicitly considers the integration of technology in defense, arms control, nonproliferation, and peacekeeping, the Center for Global Security Research makes important contributions to national and international security.
The CGSR attempts to target vexing national security issues and provide fresh insights by focusing on the policyi-technology interface. Topics studied to date include ballistic missile proliferation, the future role of nuclear deterrence, weapons-of-mass-destruction terrorism, critical infrastructure protection, future national security implications of advances in high performance computing, impact of globalization on national security, and proliferation-resistant nuclear technologies.
Benefits to the Nation
The Center for Global Security Research draws strength from its affiliation with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), a Department of Energy laboratory operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC. LLNL is one of only two laboratories authorized to work on all aspects of nuclear weapons technology, and has an extraordinarily broad and deep base of science and engineering. LLNL also offers world class capabilities in analysis, simulation and modeling. This unmatched reservoir of multi-disciplinary expertise is tapped for Center research, enhancing both the quality and the credibility of the Center's work. By supporting research that explicitly considers both technical and policy factors involved in defense programs, arms control, nonproliferation, peacekeeping and related international issues, the Center contributes significantly to national and international security.
The CGSR is an outreach effort of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, California. LLNL is operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract No. DE-AC52-07NA27344.
