ED was created in 1980 by combining offices from several federal agencies. ED's mission is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access. ED's 4,500 employees and $71.5 billion budget are dedicated to:

• Establishing policies on federal financial aid for education, and distributing as well as monitoring those funds.
• Collecting data on America's schools and disseminating research.
• Focusing national attention on key educational issues.
• Prohibiting discrimination and ensuring equal access to education.

FAQS

I am interested in learning more about financial aid for college.  Where can I find the resources?

Federal student aid programs are the largest source of funding for going to college. Learn how to apply and how the process works here .  You may also be interested in the numerous scholarships that are available.

I have defaulted on my student loan and cannot afford to repay it.

If you are unable to afford to make payments toward your defaulted loan, you should complete a Statement of Financial Status along with evidence of your current financial situation, which shows your inability to pay (i.e. paycheck stub, copies of billing statements) and send it to the servicing agency or the collection agency servicing your account. Based on the information provided, a payment plan which is both acceptable to the agency, and affordable to you, can be established.

If you are having any other problem with student loans, please provide written details to my District Office, along with a signed Release of Information form.  I will be happy to make an inquiry on your behalf.
