Although a great deal of research has been conducted on invasive aquatic species in recent years, there are many other species about which very little is known. Knowledge about the biology, habitat requirements, and potential interaction with other species in a new ecosystem, and possible control methods are key components in eradication or management of any aquatic nuisance species.

The Task Force works closely with Federal, State, and Tribal governments, stakeholders, academia and others to coordinate research activities and ensure efficient use of resources. Task Force members have also developed and disseminated a Research Protocol (pdf 720 KB). Regional Fish and Wildlife Service ANS Coordinators, Regional Panels, and member agencies present their research priorities to the Task Force, and priority species and issues are selected for recommendation to the funding agencies. Funding agencies produce requests for research proposals, and the proposals are reviewed for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and other applicable laws and regulations.
