Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Cheers on Senior Olympians

On May 17, 2014, Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Security & Protective Services (SPS) students assisted the Big Sandy Area Development District with their annual Senior Olympic games. The games were held at Dewey Dam in Jenny Wiley State Park. This makes the seventh year that our center has assisted with the event. The students were under the supervision of Jeff Case and Business Community Liaison Jimmie Slone.

The Senior Olympic games are a great opportunity for our students to give back to the community while making the seniors' experiences in the games more meaningful, especially for those whose family members were unable to attend. The students not only assisted with the games but cheered on the olympians with great enthusiasm that got them in the spirit of the games.

This event is just one of many that Carl D. Perkins Job Corps students and staff assist with annually. In the month of May 2014, our center has put in over 500 hours in community service projects.

Spreading Christmas Cheer to Furry Friends

Carl D. Perkins students recently gave some human touch to animals housed in the Floyd County Animal Shelter. There are so many animals housed in the shelter that it is all the staff can do to keep up with the daily demands of cleaning and ensuring all animals are cared for. The Perkins students assisted by taking the animals for their daily walk, cleaning out cages and stalls and taking photographs and loading them on the shelter's website pet finder.

Some students were brought to tears after befriending some of the animals. Office Administration student, Whitney Crew's, comment "We have to do something to help these animals," led to some brain-storming between students and staff. They came up with a plan to collect donations of pet food, toys and blankets and develop a partnership with the shelter so students can do work-based learning at the shelter. Beginning in January 2015, several training programs at Perkins will utilize the shelter for work-based learning including Carpentry, Facilities Maintenance and Office Administration.
