ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM AT KSC

Permitting & Compliance - Waste Management - Energetic/Ordnance Waste

Energetic materials and ordnance items may be considered either a hazardous waste or a controlled waste depending on their hazard classification.

Ordnance waste may be shipped off-Center for disposal or may be disposed locally at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Range. Disposal at the CCAFS EOD Range is performed by Air Force EOD technicians.

KSC organizations and contractors shall coordinate all energetic/ordnance waste disposal activities through the NASA Environmental Assurance Branch (EAB).

The KSC requirements for energetic/ordnance waste management are found in Chapter 13 of KNPR 8500.1 (KSC Environmental Requirements).
