Do you want to be a part of homeland security? Can you make decisions quickly? Are you good at working with people?
You might want to consider an apprenticeship in public safety. You can train to be a firefighter, police officer, fire/medic, or other public safety professional.
Here’s how to learn more:
Washington State Law Enforcement Academy provides information on the training new police officers need to receive.
South Seattle Community College offers a degree program and apprenticeship in fire science.
Pierce County’s Center of Excellence in Homeland Security provides information about homeland security issues and careers.
You can also see videos of people working in public safety. Just select “Law, Public Safety and Security” as your occupational category and then choose the job you’d like to see.
Apprentices in a Fire Safety program don’t just learn to fight fires – they also receive an Associate of Arts and Sciences Transfer degree. With this degree, an apprentice can go on to finish a Bachelor’s degree at a four-year college – or move right into a firefighting career.
Other opportunities in public safety include… working as a border control guard; helping to secure our nation’s bio-defenses; or responding to natural disasters and emergencies. Public safety workers need top-notch skills, and an apprenticeship is a great way to gain these skills!
