You may be the boss, but you're only as good as the people who work for you.

 
 
  1. No Cost
    1. Verbal
      1. Face-to-face appreciation (thanks) or words of encouragement
      2. Informal or formal public appreciation (staff meetings, etc...)
      3. Take a few moments to speak to the employee and get to know on a more personal level
      4. Written and/or documented acknowledgement
      5. Write and send a letter and add to personnel file
      6. Place a brief note (Post-it) on employee's desk or computer monitor
      7. Request a note to the employee from the Office of the Governor and Lt. Governor
    2. Perks
      1. Name a day for an employee
      2. Temporarily name a conference room after the employee
      3. Provide a reserved parking space
      4. Encourage/allow attendance to special events, training
        opportunities, etc…
      5. Allow the employee to spend a day or coffee break time with
        the Department Director
      6. Allow a day or other appropriate time period of casual attire
      7. Give the employee a temporary title promotion (can be a fun
        title)
      8. Assign Team Leader responsibilities (if applicable to
        employee)
      9. Assign additional tasks in an area the employee particularly
        enjoys
    3. Electronic
      1. Leave the employee a voice mail praising him and/or his
        performance
      2. Send an e-mail to the employee or all employees
      3. Acknowledge an employee on the department’s web-site
    4. Indirect
      1. Take action on employee idea or suggestion
      2. Hold regularly scheduled staff meetings to keep all employees
        informed and let them know they are an important part of the
        organization
  2. Low Cost
    1. Supervisor/Manager wash employees car
    2. Pack/buy lunch for the employee
    3. Design and implement a “You were Mentioned” award for
      occasions when an employee’s performance is praised by a
      coworker
    4. Design and implement a “Caught You” award to distribute to
      employees who are caught in the act of “doing something right.”
    5. Purchase a “traveling trophy” to rotate among performing
      employees
    6. Issue certificates for achievement, length-of-service, etc…
    7. Send an employee balloons or flowers (may also be “high” cost)
    8. Hold a special celebration such as an ice cream social, popsicle
      day, etc…
    9. Arrange for a photo with the Governor
    10. Plan a lunch with the Department Director or the employee’s
      supervisor or manager
    11. Provide pens, pencils, mugs, etc...may be personalized with a message
  3. High Cost
    1. Balloons or flowers
    2. Special celebrations
    3. Lunch with the Department Director or the employee’s supervisor or manager
    4. Plaques
