The Lt. Governor's BE PREPARED Awards honor Nebraskans' volunteer contributions to their communities through public safety service focusing on preparedness, response, recovery, leadership, & assistance during a disaster, emergency and/or crisis.

Seven distinct Awards are presented annually during September in conjunction with National Preparedness Month activities.

Nominations can be submitted online, mailed or faxed. Nominations mailed or faxed should be submitted to Dennis Fowler, ServeNebraska Citizen Corps Program Officer.

Awards are being issued in the following categories:

  1. Citizen Corps Council of the Year: Recognizing a local Nebraska Citizen Corps Council that:
    • includes a wide cross-section of members
    • takes an active role in their community in emergency preparedness activities;
    • extends disaster preparedness education & outreach activities to all citizens;
    • works collaboratively with local emergency management, public safety, health and volunteer organizations; and
    • develops innovative partnerships to expand community disaster preparedness and to recruit public safety volunteers.
  2. Citizen Corps Council Member of the Year: Recognizing a local Citizen Corps volunteer who:
    • demonstrates commitment and dedication in being personally prepared;
    • obtains necessary training in first aid and emergency skills;
    • responds to and assists at community events;
    • assists their community before, during and after a disaster; and
    • supports local emergency responders as needed.
  3. Citizen Corps Partner Program of the Year: Recognizing a Fire Corps, Community Emergency Response Teams-CERT, Volunteers in Police Service, Medical Reserve Corps, or Neighborhood Watch/USA on Watch Citizen Corps partner program that demonstrates an exemplary ongoing role in their community emergency preparedness activities and projects.
  4. Local Hero Award: Recognizing an individual or group that provides extraordinary service and leadership in helping fellow Nebraskans during an emergency situation, crisis or disaster. This individual or group provides meaningful support and outstanding service by aiding crisis/disaster victims or assisting at an emergency/disaster scene.
  5. Excellence in Disaster Preparedness: Recognizing superior disaster preparedness planning, disaster preparedness training & exercises, or disaster awareness program conducted by community-based organizations, businesses, non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals or government agencies.
  6. Excellence in Emergency Volunteer Mobilization: Recognizing creative and innovative efforts to organize, mobilize, train and utilize volunteers for disaster or emergency response in ways that have a positive impact upon their community and its residents.
  7. Excellence in Volunteer Public Safety: Recognizing an individual or group that demonstrates commitment and dedication to the safety of the public by volunteering to assist, train, and support public safety agencies and organizations in their efforts to prepare their community for emergencies or disasters.
